Managing for demand has become a critical component of a manager’s role. What are the key reasons for demand management having such importance in the justice system?

The concept of demand management in the justice system has attracted attention over the last couple of years. In light of this, there are various reasons why demand management is important in the justice system. First, it helps in understanding the trends and managing resources. Understanding the trend in crime enables the justices system to predict the number of imprisonment and help in allocating the required resources. Managing demand also provides an insight to the government in changing policy and adopting the one that can help to reduce the demand of the prison. Predicting the trend will, therefore, help in setting aside the required resources so as to manage demand irrespective of whether the demand was predictable or not (Walker, 2018). For instance, the justice system may introduce direct measures such as fines to reduce the demand. However, this can only be achieved if there is demand management in place. Demand is sometimes unpredictable and this may drive the cost across the justice system up. Therefore, it is important to have demand management in place so as to manage resources effectively and reduces financial pressure on the government (Walker, 2018). Over the past decade, Australian law enforcement has experienced substantial growth. Therefore, with the ministry of justices demanding more funding, managing demand serves as the best tool that can help in managing resources. This will also inform on the economical and beneficial method of punishment rather than prison. Also, demand management will help in predicting future demand of prison so that resources can be allocated to meet these future demands of prisons

The trend in the number of people being imprisoned has also increased. As such, the prisons in Australia have not kept pace with the demand. In light of this, the justice system has imposed long sentencing, tougher restriction on bails as well as more use of mandatory sentencing. This has increased the pressure in the prisons resulting in overcrowding. Over the past twenty five years, Australia has experienced an upward trend in the number of imprisonment. However, the increased number of imprisonment does not match the resources being channelled toward building new prisons. Therefore, demand management has become of profound importance so as to reduce overcrowding in the prison.  Demand management has also become important because various studies have confirmed the need for reducing the number of prisoners rather than building more prisons (Scott, 2017). This is because; non-custodial means of dealing with wrong doers such as community punishments are being proposed. This has made demand management to become important so as to reduce the number of prisoners rather than building new prisons.
