(Solution) nr 6053 week 4 Assignment: Application: Planned Change in a Department or Unit

Health care organizations are continuously immersed in change from the emergence of new policies, to promote quality care and improve patient safety to keeping pace with the rapid growth in knowledge and best practices. Establishing a solid framework for planning and implementing change is a wise move, as it provides a foundation for the extensive coordination that will be needed to successfully facilitate the change.

For this Assignment, you propose a change at the department or unit level and develop a plan for guiding the change effort.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 8 in the course text. Focus on Kurt Lewin’s change theory, and contrast it with other classic change models and strategies.
  • Reflect on problems, inefficiencies, and critical issues within a specific department, unit, or area in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Select one issue as a focal point for this assignment, and consider a change that could be made to address the issue.
  • Think about how the change would align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values as well as relevant professional standards.
  • Using one of the change models or strategies discussed in Chapter 8, begin formulating a plan for implementing the change within the department/unit. Outline the steps that you and/or others should follow to facilitate the change effort. Align these steps to the change model or strategy you selected.

Planned Change in Assisting Patients with Disabilities

In healthcare organizations, change is typically based on addressing presented challenges in a specific department or unit. According to Kash, Spaulding, Johnson, and Gamm (2014), the importance of change in a healthcare organization is based on promoting efficiency in the services provided which is related to patient quality outcome. Organizational leaders are tasked with developing and implementing profound change strategies which aid in achieving the mission, vision, and goals of an organization. Essentially, Hayes (2018) notes that the establishment of these changes are based on theories and frameworks which outline the process to follow in implementing the new strategies to address a particular change. This paper focuses on two of the core challenges that manifest at a non-profit organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities which involve complaints and grievances among the patients based on the quality of service delivery, delays, and interaction between the patients and medical practitioners. The planned change is centered on the Kurt Lewin theory of change.

Problem Identification

I work at a non-profit organization assisting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Considering the intellectual disabilities, they are described as disorders characterized by the reduced mental capacity of an individual and challenges with behaviors such as social interactions, routines and scheduling, and managing their finances (Ganaie, Shah, Jameel, & Bhat, 2015). Common conditions in this regard include cerebral palsy and autism. In the developmental disabilities, they are the long-term challenges that affect either the physical or cognitive ability of the individual or both. Examples of these disabilities include blindness and intellectual challenges that result from conditions such as Down Syndrome. While assisting these individuals, one of the core aspect to note is that their cognitive welfare determines their relationship with the healthcare providers as well as their personal satisfaction with the care they receive (Taylor, Crowther, & Bryant, 2015). In this regard, it is imperative for the medical practitioners to provide care that is consistent with these individual’s need. However, there are situations where this is not the case especially when there are disparities between what the healthcare provider is offering and what the patient wants…Please click the Paypal icon below to purchase full solution for only $10
