4.0 Chapter 4: Data Analysis

4.1 Introduction

Taking into consideration the research objectives of this study, the chapter seeks to analyse the qualitative data that was collected through interviews. In light of this, the data was analysed through template analysis, where the researcher considered coding all the correspondence themes, the researcher will be able to draw general conclusions regarding the influence of relationship quality on supply chain performance.

4.2 The impact communication on Higer’s supply chain performance

The first interview question required the interviewees to indicate how communication is conducted in Higer Company. On this, interviewee A and C had the same sentiment that “Communication in my company is usually conducted through the use of signs and semiotic rules that are understood by all parties involved”.  On the other hand, interviewee B, D, and E had the same views that “Communication in Higer Company is usually conducted through emails, phone calls, and messages in an attempt to transfer information from one party to another.  From these responses, it can be deduced that communication is fundamental as far as the supply chain management of Higer Company is concerned. Taking this into consideration, it can be concluded from the responses that communication in the company is usually through the use of signs and semiotic rules that are well understood by all the stakeholders of the supply chain. Besides, it is deducible from the responses that the emails phone calls, as well as messages are widely used throughout the supply chain for the purpose of ensuring that the products are delivered to the end users conveniently.

When the interviewees were asked about how they ensure effective communication in the supply chain, this is what they had to say; interviewee A, D and E had the same views that “ Effective communication in Higer’s supply chain is typically ensured through frequent as timely communication with the customers and suppliers. This as a result usually helps in supply chain manager in resolving any disputes with the customers or suppliers easily” on the other hand, interviewee B and C have the share the same sentiments that “For the purpose of ensuring effective communication in the supply chain in this company, there is usually the use of a wide range of communication systems such as internet. This as a result helps greatly in enhancing communication across the entire supply chain”. From these responses, it is evident that Higer Company has to a considerable extent ensured effective communication throughout it supply chain. Taking this into consideration, Higer Company has ensured effective communication through frequent and timely communication with the customers and suppliers, which as a result helps in solving any disputes easily. Besisdes, Higer Company ensures effective communication in the supply chain through the use of various communication systems such as internet, which help in increasing communication in the entire supply chain.

When the interviewees were asked about the impact of communication on supply chain performance of Higer Company, interviewee A and B had the same opinion that “Through effective communication in the supply chain of Higer Company, there is usually increased productivity owing to the fact that there is typically no need of repeated communication. Consequently, time wastage is reduced, which in turns increases the productivity of the supply chain to a considerable extent” . Interviewee C and E also has the same view that “ Effective communication in the supply chain of this company helps greatly in setting priorities as well as assigning tasks, which ultimately results to improved performance”. When it comes to interviewee D, he asserted that “Effective communication in the supply chain of Higer Company has helped in improving the morale of the employees, which has made them to remain productive. This as a result has increased the overall productivity as well as profitability of the organisation”. From these responses, it is with not doubt that communication has significantly helped in improving supply chain performance of Higer Company. Precisely, through communication, productivity has been increased due as there is no repeated communication, which would otherwise result to time wastage. Additionally, it can be deduced from the responses that communication helps in setting priorities and assigning of tasks, which in turn improves supply chain performance. Lastly, it has been established from the responses that effective communication in the supply chain of Higer Company helps in increasing the morale of the workers, thus making them more productive in the supply chain.

4.3 The impact of trust on Higer’s supply chain performance

When the interviewees were asked on how the aspect of trust comes out in their supply chain, this is what they said; interviewee A and B had the same sentiment that “The aspect of trust in the supply chain of Higer Company is usually portrayed when one party is considered honest by the other party within the supply chain”. On the other hand, Interviewee C, D, and E had similar opinion that “In the supply chain of Higer Company, the aspect of trust is typically portrayed when a party within the supply chain will not behave in an opportunistic manner”. The responses from the interviewees depict that the aspect of trust in the supply chain of Higer Company is portrayed through showing the aspect of honest among members of the supply chain. Besides, trust is portrayed through the expectation that the stakeholders of the supply chain will behave in a manner that is not considered opportunistic.

When the interviewees were asked how they have built trust with the buyers, Interviewee A, B, and D had similar opinions that “We usually build trust with our buyers through being honest to them in regard to the supply of their orders. Through such, it becomes easier for them to trust us on the our services in terms of purchase of goods as well as delivery” On the other hand, interviewee C and E had the same views that ‘’ In this company, trust in the supply chain is typically build through sharing useful information with them that can help in reducing opportunistic behaviours such as fraud”. From these responses, it is evident that trust can be build in the supply chain through being honest with the buyer when it comes to the delivery of orders. Besides, it has been established that trust can be build through sharing useful information with the buyers, which significantly reduce the chances of opportunistic behaviours such as fraud.

When the interviewees were asked about the impact of trust on the supply chain of Higer Company, interviewee A asserted that “Through trust between us and the buyers, there is usually production of outcomes that play a fundamental role in promoting efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity” Interviewee  B, and C had the same feeling and indicated that “With trust among the partners in the supply chain, there is usually creation of a condition where the transactions do not need to be scrutinised and verified. This is as a result helps in reducing the transaction costs, thus increasing the profitability of the company”. Interviewee D and E indicated that “When trust is prevailing between the seller and the buyer within the supply chain, it usually becomes possible to create value added activities between the partners. From these responses, it is deducible that the impact of trust on the supply chain performance cannot be overlooked. Precisely, through trust in the supply chain, there is typically reduction of transaction cost owing to the fact that transactions do not need to be scrutinised and verified. Additionally, it is through trust in the supply chain that there is promotion of efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity, which in turns enhances the overall performance of the supply chain.  Trust in supply chain, as established from the responses also helps greatly in creating value added activities between supply chain partners, which as a result improves the overall supply chain performance.

4.4 The impact of cooperation on Higer’s supply chain performance

When the interviewees were asked about how the aspect of cooperation is portrayed in their company, interviewee A, D, and E indicated that” Cooperation in the supply chain in this company comes out clearly through collaboration among the various parties that are involved in the supply chain including the suppliers as well as the buyers”.  On the other hand, interviewee B and C had the same view indicating that “On this company, cooperation is evident where we work together with the buyers for the purpose of ensuring that their products are delivered on time, and in the expected quality and quantity”. Taking these responses into consideration, it can be deduced that cooperation the supply chain typically occurs when all parties involved in the supply chain work together. Additionally, cooperation in the supply chain can be evident when the sellers and buyers work together for the purpose of ensuring that that products ordered are delivered on time, and on the right quantity as well as quality.

When the interviewees were asked about how they cooperate with their customers, interviewee A, B asserted that “ In the Higer company, cooperation with the customers is usually evident. On this, we always work together with the customers through ought the supply chain, which makes it possible for use to deliver to deliver their products on time” interviewee C, D, and E had similar views that “ We believe that the only way of ensuring cooperation in the supply chain management in this company is through ensuring that we collaborate directly with the buyers, and communicating regularly regarding ordered products. As such, it is usually easier to avoid possible disputes with the customers, thus making it possible for them to get the right products and on time”. From these responses, it is evident that cooperation in the supply chain

When the interviewees were asked about the impact of cooperation on supply chain performance, interviewee A and E indicated that “In supply chain of Higer Company, cooperation is usually fundamental as it helps in reducing uncertainty during the transaction process, thus improving the overall performance of the supply chain”. Interviewee B indicated that “Through cooperation in the supply chain, the involved parties are usually in a position of understanding the expectations and needs of each other in a better way. This as a result helps in achieving mutual goals, thus improving supply chain performance to a considerable extent” interviewee C indicated that,  Cooperation in the supply chain in this company helps greatly in maintaining long term relations which in turn helps in not only improving the supply chain performance, but also creating customer loyalty”. Lastly, interviewee E indicated that “Cooperation between partners in the supply chain helps in making the right decision, which not only reduces risks in the supply chain, but also the transactional costs”.

These responses have shown that the significance of cooperation in the supply chain of paramount importance as far as supply chain performance is concerned.  Precisely, it has been established that cooperation in supply chain plays a huge role in reducing uncertainties during the transaction process. This as a result simplifies the supply chain performances, thus improving the performance. Besides, it has been established that cooperation in the supply chain helps partners in understanding the expectations as well as needs of each other in a better way, thus helping in achieving mutual goals as well as objectives. The impact of this is improved supply chain performance.  Cooperation in the supply chain has also been seen to help in maintaining long term relationships with the customer, thus enhancing customer loyalty.  Lastly, it has been established from the responses that cooperation in the supply chain greatly helps in making the involved parties make the right decision in regards to all the activities in the supply chain. While this helps in reducing any possible risk in the supply chain, it also helps greatly in reducing the transactional costs. Thus, supply chain performance is improved to a considerable extent.

4.5 The impact of interdependence on Higer’s supply chain performance

When the interviewees were asked about how the aspect of interdependence is portrayed in the Higer company, interviewee A, B, and E had similar opinion that “ Interdependence in supply chain in this company is shown where the parties involved I the supply chain rely on each other emotionally, economically, as well as morally. For instance, we have to rely on the consumers in the supply chain as they form the basis for the revenues in the company. On the other hand, the customers have to rely on us to deliver their orders on time, and in the right quality as well as quantity” When it comes to interviewees C and D, they had the same sentiment that “  Interdependence in supply chain in this company is portrayed through mutual reliance between the company and our customers”. From these responses, it can be deduced that interdependence is usually portrayed through mutual reliance between the suppliers and the buyers, where each party rely on each other for mutual benefits. Precisely, the sellers have to rely on the buyers as they are the source of revenue. On the other hand, the buyers have to rely on the sellers in order to get their products delivered to them on time, and in the right quality and quantity.

When the interviewees were asked about the level of interdependence that exists between Higer company and the customers, interviewee A and E had the similar opinion that “In this company, the level of interdependence in the supply chain is high to considerable extent, as we have to rely to the consumers, and they also have to rely on us throughout the supply chain”. On the other hand, interviewee B, C, and D had the similar view that “  The level of interdependence on the supply chain of this company usually presents  a strong cohesion between the suppliers and the buyers, which makes it possible for the products to be delivered to the buyers on time and on the right quantity” From these responses, it is with no doubt that the level of interdependence between the buyers and the suppliers in the supply chain need to be strong. This is because it makes it possible for the buyers to get their products delivered to them on time, having met the expectations and needs of the customers.

When the interviewees were asked about the impact of interdependence on supply chain performance in Higer Company, interviewee A asserted that “Supply chain interdependence in this company plays a fundamental role in providing the context in which trust as well as commitment grows, thus enhancing business outcomes”. Interviewees B and E indicated that “When the level of interdependence between the supplier and buyer increases, the impact of trust and commitment increases proportionally on the supply chain performance’, When it comes to interviewees C and D, they indicated that “Through effective interdependence between partners in supply chain management, there is usually confidence as well as expectation that one party will keep the promise. This as a result plays crucial role in enhancing the overall performance of the supply chain”.  The responses of the interviewees have demonstrated that interdependence in the supply chain is detrimental when it comes to enhancing the overall supply chain performance. Precisely, through interdependence in the supply chain, it has been established that, there is growth of trust and commitment between supply chain partners, which as a result enhances supply chain performance.  Besides, when trust and commitment between the supply chain partners increase, customers are usually able to get their products on time, and in the right quantity as well as quality. Consequently, the performance of the supply chain is boosted considerably. Additionally, it has been established that interdependence between supply chain partners, confidence and expectation that one party will keep the promise is usually there. Through such, supply chain performance is improved to a considerable extent.

4.6 Chapter summary

In summary, this chapter has verified that the aspects of communication, cooperation, trust and interdependence usually have a significant impact on the supply chain performance. Precisely, as regards to communication in supply chain management, it has been established that communication increases productivity as there is no repeated communication. Besides, communication increasing the morale of the workers thus makes them more productive in the supply chain. When it comes to trust in supply chain management, it usually helps in reducing the transaction cost owing to the fact that transactions do not need to be scrutinised and verified. Besides, through trust there is promotion of efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity, which in turns enhances the overall performance of the supply chain. As regards to cooperation in supply chain management, it has been established that it plays a huge role in reducing uncertainties during the transaction process.  It also helps in maintaining long term relationships with the customer, thus enhancing customer loyalty.   Trust also helps in making the involved parties make the right decision in regards to all the activities in the supply chain. Lastly, when it comes to the aspect of interdependence in supply chain, it contributes to the growth of trust and commitment between supply chain partners, which as a result enhances supply chain performance.
